MEET THE TEAM

Rachael Mortimer

Rachael is a copy-editor and proofreader with The History Quill living in Wiltshire, UK. She has been editing and proofreading since 2015, and she trained with the Publishing Training Centre and the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading.

In her free time, she enjoys reading historical fiction and non-fiction (especially anything set during the Wars of the Roses or the Tudor period) and watching history documentaries and dramas, her favourites including Poldark and The Last Kingdom.

If Rachael were stranded on a desert island, the historical novels she would want with her are The White Queen by Philippa Gregory, which first sparked her interest in the Wars of the Roses, and Treachery by S. J. Parris. This is the Giordano Bruno book she enjoyed the most, although she loves the whole series, because they are beautifully written, compelling, full of twists and turns, and they immerse the reader in Elizabethan England.

“Rachael has been a great help to me with copy-editing. She has polished up my grammar and punctuation, but also prepared character lists and made sure that the spelling of names is consistent. She has also identified moments where my writing has been ambiguous or unclear and suggested improvements. My concerns about writing quality are eliminated when I know that my manuscript will pass through her hands.”
