Saturday 3 February – Sunday 4 February, 2024

The History Quill will host a two day virtual convention for historical fiction writers on the weekend of 3–4 February, 2024. Each day has a theme, and you can attend both days or just one, depending on where your interests lie. As this is a virtual convention, participation will be exclusively online, via Zoom.

There will be multiple events on each day, all of them matching the theme of the day. These will include expert presentations, panel discussions, critique sessions, and discussion rooms. We will announce the full agenda, including speakers and topics, when we open for bookings in December.

Read on for details of the themes for each day and an FAQ section.

If you’re not already on our email list, we suggest joining via the button below to receive updates on the convention, including notification when we open for bookings.

Themes

DAY ONE (Saturday 3 February) – THE CRAFT OF HISTORICAL FICTION

Day one is dedicated to the craft of historical fiction. Drawing on the knowledge of our editors, experts, and successful historical fiction authors, we will explore key debates and challenges specific to the genre, while also covering broader craft topics. For those just getting started in historical fiction, this day is the perfect introduction, while experienced writers will benefit from the more advanced sessions.

DAY TWO (Sunday 4 February) – THE BUSINESS OF HISTORICAL FICTION

Day two will explore the business of historical fiction, from achieving publication right the way through to creating a successful author business. We’ll cover the historical fiction market, querying agents, self-publishing, book marketing trends, and changes in the industry that will impact you as an author, most especially the recent advances in artificial intelligence.

Please note the stipulation about time zones below.

Will you accommodate different time zones?

We will organise the convention schedule to align well with North American and European time zones. Most events will take place at times of the day that are suitable for both North American and European participants. A small number of events will take place either in the early morning in North America or the late evening in Europe, but these will be recorded for you to watch later.

If you are outside North America and Europe, you can still participate, but the convention may not align well with your local time zone. However, most of the convention will be recorded for you to watch at your convenience.

Will the convention be recorded?

Yes, the vast majority of the convention will be recorded and available for viewing for up to four weeks afterwards for free. We will also provide lifetime access as an optional extra.

The only events not recorded will be critiquing sessions and discussion rooms, as these are focused almost entirely on live participation. All other types of event will be recorded.

Who will speak at the convention? What will the agenda be?

We are currently preparing the agenda and inviting speakers. We will publish the full agenda when we open for bookings.

When will you open for bookings?

December, TBC.

Can I choose which days I attend?

Yes, you can book both days or just one, depending on where your interests lie.

What if I can't attend some or all of the convention live but still want to have access to the events?

No problem! If you want to attend but are unable to join us live for some or all of the convention, you can watch the recordings at your convenience instead.

How much will the convention cost?

We will confirm the price when we open for bookings in December.
